About me

Prof. Bruce Ransom is chair and head of the Department of Neuroscience at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and professor emeritus of neurology at the University of Washington. He is an expert in the physiology and anatomy of glial cells, especially astrocytes. Through his successful research career, his work has contributed to understanding the ionic mechanisms of white matter injury, the role of hemichannels on astrocytic glutamate release and the role of astrocytes as glycogen stores for maintaining axonal function. He is co-founder and co-editor-in-Chief of the journal GLIA, the leading journal on glial research. In 2020, he was included among the Top 2% most highly cited scientists in their respective fields. Prof. Ransom will lecture on the cellular mechanism of brain injury due to stroke at the 4th Symposium of Neuroglia Physiology and Pathology.
